ReadyNAS OS 6: RN100/RN2120 cannot update due to invalid checksum

NETGEAR is aware of an issue when upgrading your ReadyNAS to ReadyNAS OS 6.4.0 or newer.

You may run into an issue if you meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Remotely or locally upgraded your ReadyNAS to OS 6.4.0, but after reboot, the ReadyNAS is still on its previous firmware version (before OS 6.4.0).
  2. The initrd.log file indicates "Update image checksum mismatch (7d47463d9c9014d7dc3a1cd8b88d33a7/...)"
  3. You are using a ReadyNAS 102, 104 or 2120.

A mechanism that verifies the checksum of the update file during upgrade is reporting an invalid checksum, and instead, reboots you back into the previous firmware version you were using. As such, you may not successfully be able to upgrade the ReadyNAS to a version newer than OS 6.4.0 using conventional methods, such as the local update or the remote update methods.

Note: If you are not using an RN100 series or an RN2120, do not use this workaround. This is specifically for RN102/104/2120.

Note: If you are already on OS 6.4.0 or newer, this workaround does not apply.

Workaround

In order to upgrade your ReadyNAS to OS 6.4.0 or newer, you will need to follow the steps below.

Note: Please read and understand all instructions prior to performing the steps.

  1. Download complete-flash-update_1.0_armel.deb and save it to a familiar place
  2. Navigate to the ReadyNAS Admin Page and take note of the firmware version you are currently on.
    1. If you are on ReadyNAS OS 6.1.9 or older, follow the instructions for remotely or locally updating your ReadyNAS to 6.4.0, but instead of rebooting your ReadyNAS, click Close
    2. If you are on ReadyNAS OS 6.2.0 or newer, proceed.
  3. Navigate to Apps and click Upload in the top right corner
  4. Click Browse and select the complete-flash-update_1.0_armel.deb package you downloaded in step 1.
  5. Click Upload.
    1. During this time, the ReadyNAS will download the latest firmware package (except on OS 6.1.9 and earlier) and prepare the unit for rebooting into OS 6.4.0.
  6. When you are alerted that the App was successfully installed in the notification bar, proceed with rebooting your ReadyNAS.
  7. When your ReadyNAS reboots, it will be on ReadyNAS OS 6.4.0.
