Note1: If you are already using Time Machine software with your USB hard drive, you can skip Steps 1 through 3, and go to Step 4.

Step 1: Physically connect the USB hard drive to your Mac.

Note-1: The NETGEAR router only supports GUID and MBR partitions. To see how to change the partition scheme, please see "Changing the Partition Scheme" at the bottom part of this page.

Note-2: We suggest using a new USB HDD or formatting your old USB disk to do the Time Machine backup for the first time. Use a blank partition to prevent some issues during backup using Time Machine.

Step 4: Unplug the USB hard drive from your Mac and connect it to the router.

To access the connected USB hard drive from your Mac or PC:

  • On a Mac: Go > Connect to Server >type: smb: //readyshare
  • On a PC: Start > Run > type: \\readyshare

Step 5: In the pop-up window, select Registered User, and enter admin as the username and password as the password. Click Connect.

Step 6: After connecting successfully, you can see a list of connected devices. Note that you see one extra device, called admin, whenever you log in as admin.

Step 9: Click Select Disk and choose your USB drive as the backup disk. Click the Use for Backup button to complete your selection.

Note: If you can't see the USB partition which you want to use for backup in the Time Machine disk list, go to Mac finder then click on the USB partition in which you want to backup. Then you will see that device in Time Machine list.

Step 10: If it prompts for the name and password, enter admin as the username and password as the password. Click Connect.
