Overview:

This article will provide steps on how set up VPN server on my R8000 router with a MAC OS computer.

Resolution:

A virtual private network (VPN) lets you use the Internet to securely access your network when you aren’t home. This type of VPN access is called a client-to-gateway tunnel. The computer is the client, and the router is the gateway.

Note: The router currently does not support iOS and Android VPN client software. It is also recommended to use a Static IP Address or to use a DDNS account when using VPN. Click here to set up your own DDNS account.

To enable R8000’s VPN Feature:

1. Use your computer that’s connected to the router via wired or wireless connection.

2. Open your Internet browser such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.

3. Go to the address bar and type http://www.routerlogin.com or http://www.routerlogin.net.

4. On the authentication window, the default username is admin and the default password is password.

5. NETGEAR Genie displays. 

6. Click on Advanced Tab then go to Advanced Setup. Look for VPN Service and click on it.

7. Click on Enable VPN Service and click on Apply.

Note: If you want to change some settings under Advanced Configurations, do it first before clicking on Apply button.

8. Download the VPN configuration file for non-Windows.

To configure Tunnelblick on your MAC OS computer:

1. Open Tunnelblick VPN client on your MAC OS computer. Click here to download Tunnelblick VPN client.

2. Click on I have configuration files.

3. Click on OpenVPN Configuration(s).

4. A folder will be automatically created on your Desktop named Empty Tunnelblick VPN Configuration.

5. Transfer the VPN configuration file that you have downloaded from the R8000 to the Empty Tunnelblick VPN Configuration folder.

6. Rename the Empty Tunnelblick VPN Configuration to any name that you want and add an extension of .tblk to the end of the name of the folder.

7. Double click the new named folder to install it and select the user(s) that you want to use it.

8. Once it is installed, it will now be available in your Tunnelblick VPN client.

9. Select the configuration name and click on Connect.

10. Wait for the connection to become connected.
