Upgrading your Router's Firmware Manually
Overview:
This article will guide you to upload the firmware manually in case you need to load a specific firmware version or your router fails to update its firmware automatically.
Symptoms:
- needs to update the firmware of the router to a particular version
- automatic firmware update is not working
- the router failed to detect a new firmware for the router
Process:
- Download the firmware of your router and save it to a convenient place like your desktop. Unzip if needed. The correct firmware file should have an ".img" or ".chk" extension.
- Using a computer that is connected wired to the router (via an Ethernet cable), open a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox).
Note: Do not use a computer that is connected wirelessly to the router to upload the firmware. A wireless firmware update might corrupt the firmware of the router rendering it unusable. - Access the router settings page by entering http://www.routerlogin.com or http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar of the browser. You can also use the following if the addresses given did not work:
- A window will prompt for a username and password. The default username is "admin" and the default password is "password". Note: The username and password are case sensitive. If the default username and password is not working, you might have changed the password. Please try other passwords that you might have changed to. Otherwise, a factory reset is needed to restore the router to factory defaults.
- Once you see the NETGEAR Genie page, click on the Advanced tab then choose Firmware Update or Firmware Upgrade under Administration on the left hand panel. Note: On older routers, the router settings page will be the NETGEAR Smart Wizard. If you have the NETGEAR Smart Wizard, click on Router Upgrade or Router Update under Maintenance on the left hand panel. The NETGEAR Genie configuration page is different from the NETGEAR Genie software you install on your computer.
- Click on the Choose File button.
- Locate and highlight the firmware you saved and hit the Open button.
- After you have chosen the firmware, click on the Upload button. The router will now initiate the firmware upload. Do not interrupt this process since the router will be corrupted and will be unusable if the firmware upload is interrupted.
Note:The process should be the same if your router is using the NETGEAR Smart Wizard. - The router will reboot after the firmware is uploaded. If your router did not reboot, you can check the Router Status page to confirm if the firmware version is now changed to the version you uploaded.
