ReadyNAS OS 6 - Configuring jumbo frames
To enable jumbo frames, you need to increase the MTU of the network interface as follows:
- On the ReadyNAS GUI, go to the Network tab.
- Click the interface on which you wish to enable jumbo frames and press Settings.
The settings window for that interface appears.
- Under the General tab, increase the MTU to the required value and press Apply.
Note: The MTU specified here (9000 in this example) does not include the frame header. Therefore when configuring jumbo frames on a connected NETGEAR switch, the switch port MTU should be set to a slightly higher value (since this value does include the header).
ReadyNAS Jumbo Frames FAQ
What are jumbo frames?
Jumbo frames are Ethernet frames with more than 1500 bytes of payload (MTU), typically up to 9180 bytes. Jumbo frames combine multiple packets into one large packet to reduce processing time, reduce network overhead, and increase transfer performance.
Is jumbo frames enabled by default?
No, the jumbo frames option is disabled by default.
How do I enable jumbo frames on my ReadyNAS?
Jumbo frames can be enabled from Frontview by going to Network > Interfaces > Enable jumbo frames. Once enabled, you will need to reboot your ReadyNAS unit.
Notes:
- In order to leverage jumbo frames on your ReadyNAS, you will need a jumbo frame capable switch and a client system with jumbo frame-capable network controllers. The client network driver must be set up for jumbo frame support in order to promote jumbo frame transfer between the client and the ReadyNAS unit.
- When jumbo frames is enabled on ReadyNAS but the client has non-jumbo frame network interfaces to access the ReadyNAS, the frame size will be automatically negotiated down to non-jumbo size.
- Jumbo frames may affect your ability to appropriately access the internet for services like ReadyCLOUD and ReadyNAS Replicate.
